No Chess Club on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Back at 7.30 on January 7th.
Club players from the 70's, including Dave Fuller, who still plays for us. (Standards have slipped and ties are no longer required for playing chess.)
In the 1970's, Meir Chess Club played at the old Meir Youth and Community Centre near Meir cross roads. When the Centre closed the Club played at the King's Arms pub, where Meir Health Centre now stands. In those days, the Club had some 30 members and fielded five teams in the Stoke League. The then secretary, Malcolm Hulme, told the Evening Sentinel: "There is a good atmosphere, but we have few players of a high standard. The majority are average. Chess tends to be misunderstood. You don't have to be a Grand Master because it is a game for the average man in the street.
The Club moved again and changed its name to the Creda Chess Club. Following a further change of venue, it became Caverswall Chess Club in 2006. Following a move to the Royal British Legion Club in Normacot in 2007 we adopted the name "Meir Chess Club." Unfortunately, the Royal British Legion had to close down at short notice in June 2024, and we moved to the John Marston pub in Blurton.

League and Cup success has, for the most part, eluded us in recent years, although we won the newly resurrected NSDCA Division 5 in 2013/14. Our most successful period was in the early part of the millenium when, playing as Creda, we won the Jackson Cup in 2002 and the Withnall Trophy in 2003. Both are County Cups. In the more local NSDCA cup competitions we won the Major Cup in 2001/02 and the Intermediate Cup in 2002/03. For a few years we also played in the Derby League, but withdrew in 2006.
At their Annual Meeting in 2025, the Staffordshire Chess Association named Meir the County's "Club of the Year." This was partly for our support of the County's under-1450 team and partly for arranging for NSDCA meetings at our club venue.
